Winter Isn’t a Stop Sign. It’s a Setup Season.
Winter gets a bad reputation.
For a lot of tradies and service businesses, it’s when the phone slows down, the calendar opens up a bit, and there’s a temptation to just ride it out until things pick up again.
And look, for some industries, that’s just the reality.
But here’s what I’ve seen over the years.
The businesses that come out of winter strong aren’t the ones that got lucky.
They’re the ones who used the quieter periods to get clear, get organised, and stay visible while everyone else went quiet.
Because winter isn’t a stop sign.
It’s a setup season.
The Reality for Shoalhaven & Illawarra Businesses
Locally, we’ve got our own rhythm.
Tourism dips. The weather turns. Some jobs get delayed. Outdoor work can slow down depending on conditions.
But at the same time:
Things still break.
Hot water systems still fail.
Roofs still leak.
People still renovate, repair, and maintain.
Demand doesn’t disappear.
It just shifts.
And when demand shifts, your marketing needs to shift with it, not disappear altogether.
The Biggest Mistake Businesses Make in Winter
The most common mistake?
They go quiet.
They stop posting.
They stop updating things.
They stop thinking about marketing altogether.
And what happens?
👉 Visibility drops
👉 Competitors move ahead
👉 Enquiries become inconsistent
Then spring hits… and they’re trying to catch up.
Marketing doesn’t work like that.
You don’t turn it off and expect momentum to still be there later.
What Smart Businesses Do Instead
The businesses that handle winter well don’t necessarily do more.
They just do the right things, in the right order.
Here’s where I’d focus.
1. Get Clear on What You Offer
Winter is one of the best times to step back and look at your messaging.
Ask yourself:
👉 Is it obvious what we do?
👉 Is it clear who we help?
👉 Is it easy for someone to understand why they’d choose us?
Most businesses overcomplicate this.
Clarity wins.
Every time.
Because if people don’t understand you quickly, they move on.
2. Fix What’s Holding You Back (Website)
If your website hasn’t been touched in a couple of years, chances are it’s costing you work.
Not because it’s broken — but because it’s unclear.
Common issues we see:
- No clear message
- Outdated content
- Poor structure
- Hard to contact
Winter is the perfect time to clean this up.
Because when things get busy again, you won’t have time.
3. Get Your Google Presence Right
This is a big one.
Most enquiries for local businesses start on Google.
Not your website.
Not your socials.
Google.
So ask yourself:
👉 Are our reviews consistent and recent?
👉 Are our photos current?
👉 Does our listing actually reflect the work we do?
If not, this is low-hanging fruit.
Small improvements here can make a big difference.
4. Build a Content Library (Not Just Posts)
One of the smartest things you can do in winter is build assets.
Not just post randomly.
Start capturing:
- Jobs you’ve completed
- Before and after shots
- Team in action
- Quick tips or explanations
This becomes your content library.
And once you have it, marketing becomes easier, faster, and more consistent.
5. Stay Visible (Even When It’s Quiet)
Just because things feel quieter doesn’t mean people aren’t watching.
They are.
They’re researching.
Comparing.
Shortlisting.
And often, they’re choosing who they’ll contact later.
A simple post.
A quick update.
A job you’ve completed.
That’s enough to stay top of mind.
You don’t need to overdo it.
You just need to be present.
6. Plan Ahead (Spring Starts Now)
Spring is when things ramp up across many industries.
But here’s the reality:
👉 The businesses that win in spring started preparing in winter.
Now is the time to:
- Plan campaigns
- Book content sessions
- Get your messaging right
- Align your marketing
Because when things get busy, strategy usually goes out the window.
Marketing Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
There’s a misconception that marketing needs to be complex to work.
It doesn’t.
At its core, it’s simple:
- Be clear
- Be visible
- Build trust
- Make it easy to contact you
That’s it.
Do that consistently, and things start to move.
The Advantage Most Businesses Miss
Winter creates a gap.
Some businesses pull back.
Others stay consistent.
That gap is where opportunity sits.
Because while others go quiet, you’ve got the chance to:
- Improve your positioning
- Strengthen your presence
- Build momentum
And that momentum carries forward.
Winter won’t last forever.
But the work you do during it?
That sticks.
It shows up in:
- Better enquiries
- More consistent work
- Stronger positioning in the market
So instead of asking:
“How do we get through winter?”
A better question is:
“How do we use winter to get ahead?”
Because the businesses that answer that properly…
Are the ones that don’t just stay busy.
They build.

I started my career in hospitality working all aspects of a restaurant from back of house cook to front of house server, bar and management. The last 15 years of my career have truly been a journey of discovery. I have worked for some of the major telecommunication brands in Australia as Sales both in store and B2B, Manager, Trainer and Marketing. I have worked in the Job Services industry which in my role I was exposed to many different businesses and curious as to how they operated. I also returned to Telco only to discover I had a passion for wanting to do my own thing. I am a keen learner and Social Media was not only fun but the biggest change to marketing since television.
My first experience of sales and marketing was when I was 18 and I interviewed for a job with an electrical/telecommunications retailer who tossed a blue BIC pen on the desk between us and said “Sell me this pen” my natural instinct was to start talking, and to anyone who has known me for a very long time, I didn’t stop for a number of years.
